James Clifford Whitten, 76, of Florence, passed away Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012, at ECM Hospital. He was a member of the Alabama Bluegrass Music Association. He had a special place in his heart for Bluegrass music. James’ career included playing in many different bands, Rual Yarbrough and the Dixiemen, The Southern Strangers, and currently, The Jake Landers Band. The highlight of his career was when he played with Porter Wagner. He also played with Mac Wiseman, Wade Mainer, and three shows with Lonzo and Oscar. But his most favorite memory was when he was playing with The Southern Strangers band in Rome, Georgia at a bluegrass festival and they were called back on stage for an encore seven times! Another one of his loves was being an auctioneer. He operated an auction house in Rhodesville and assisted with many others around the area.
